JAMES WILLSTROP — Former World #1

Author of “Shot and a Ghost” — Coach to Mostafa Asal

Precision, creativity, and the art of controlling space. Willstrop brings the most elegant skill-set in modern squash and turns it into structure players can actually train.

Focus Areas

  • Accuracy as a weapon

  • Court craft, angles, and delayed decisions

  • Shot quality under fatigue

James Willstrop, former World #1 and one of the most respected players in squash history, is renowned for the precision, tactical brilliance, and calmness he brought to the court. This Master Class offers a rare opportunity to study the game through his intellectual and technically masterful lens.

Why Train with James Willstrop?

Willstrop, also known as "The Marksman," didn't just win matches—he controlled them with an elegant, almost surgical approach. Now, as a leading coach who guides World #1 talents like Mostafa Asal, he translates that elite-level understanding into actionable training principles.

What You Will Learn:

  • Accuracy as a Weapon: Move beyond hitting the ball hard and learn to treat accuracy as your primary weapon. Focus on weight of shot, consistent length, and making the ball stick.

  • Court Craft and Angles: Develop the ability to see and use the entire court. Willstrop will teach you to manipulate angles and incorporate subtle, delayed decisions that disrupt your opponent’s rhythm and movement.

  • Controlling the Mid-Court: Learn the secrets to maintaining composure and executing high-quality shots, even when fatigued or under pressure. Mastery of shot quality under duress is the hallmark of a world-class player.

  • The Smartest, Fittest, Calmest Player Wins: Absorb the philosophy that underpins his success: combining physical fitness, tactical intelligence, and emotional discipline to win consistently.

The Asal Connection: Why the World's Best Seek His Guidance

Mostafa Asal, a player known for his high-octane, aggressive style, trains with James Willstrop to refine his game with precision and structure. Asal understands that raw power must be tempered by intelligent ball placement and court management. By working with Willstrop, Asal is adding nuance and controlled accuracy to his explosive game, ensuring his athleticism is channeled for maximum strategic impact.

If your goal is to move from a good player to a great one—one who controls the rally, dictates the pace, and forces the opponent into uncomfortable positions—this Master Class is an essential investment in your competitive future.

Payer Levels & Camp Times

We have 3 player groups to make it a summer that grows with you. Each player will be challenged and guided at the right level, always keeping in mind that every session counts in every way.

The 3 groups are:

- Group 1: Players with a USSquash Rating <3, training between 9am and 3:30pm

- Group 1: Players with a USSquash Rating 3-4.5, training between 9am and 3:30pm

- Group 1: Players with a USSquash Rating +4.5, training between 12-5pm

--> For the training times per group, please check out the table in the picture section.

The groups are based on USSquash rating and our coaches monitor the grouping cautiously every day. We place participants in the group where they will gain the most benefit, ensuring the curriculum perfectly matches their needs. This segmentation allows us to focus our coaching efforts more effectively, delivering targeted drills, tactical lessons, and match play opportunities.

Every Session Counts

Our philosophy remains centered on the idea that every session counts in every way. This commitment translates into:

  • Structured Progression: A clear, incremental curriculum for each group, ensuring steady skill and physical training progression.

  • High-Quality Repetitions: Maximized court time for all, with purposeful activities, and learning on and off court

  • Mental Toughness: Integrated instruction focusing on the right mindset, on-court focus, competitive approach, and sportsmanship.

By ensuring the appropriate challenge and guidance within these new, specialized groups, we guarantee that your unlimited summer pass delivers an unparalleled opportunity for improvement, confidence-building, and fun.
